Tips for bridal hair. Aside from the perfect outfit, deciding on a hair style is one of the priorities for the Big Day.

Choosing that perfect look can be overwhelming with so many options available, but fear not! We’re here to guide you through the hottest bridal hair trends, plus top tips to ensure you find the ‘do that complements your personal style whilst enhancing your bridal glow.

Whether you’re more trend-led or timeless, checking out the biggest wedding trends is a great place to start, and we checked in with leading wedding hair stylist and entrepreneur Anna Sorbie, to find out what’s on trend and her top tips for the getting the best from your bridal hair.

What’s hot? ‘We’re seeing a continuation of the trend for the more minimalist bride. A less structured, effortless look or a sleek approach to an updo,’ Anna explains. ‘The simplicity of the style supports the attention given to the dress – it’s all eyes on the dress right now. Have a hair and make-up trial before your final fitting to see the whole look together before the big day, trust me, it will be worth it.’

1. Glossy and straight is here to stay

‘Brides can struggle to retain curls and may feel like they don’t suit them. A great alternative is a sleek, sophisticated style, finished off with something sparkly,’ says Anna. ‘This is just the thing for brides who are opting to go beyond an understated veil and integrate accessories into their bridal look.’ To help give your hair natural, healthy shine think about using quality hair care products, have your hair professionally coloured (stay away from the box dye!) and enrich your diet with plenty of extra Omega-3 where you can.

2. The slicked-back bun is coming straight from the red carpet to your destination wedding

The slick bun will continue to rock for 2023 and into 2024 – as seen on all the red carpets and runways. Sleek, middle parted with a neat knot at the nape is the way forward. This statement look is loved by minimal and maximalist brides alike. Simple, elegant, and stylish is the name of the game here. They are sophisticated, clean, fuss-free, and super flattering, not to mention a practical support for your veil and hair accessories. And the great thing about this style is that it’s easy to replicate and perfect for a destination wedding! Talk to your stylist about how to do it yourself and get that stunning, slicked-back look in the sunshine.

 3. Ponytails are back with roaring success

Up-dos are forever a crowd pleaser, but Anna has more and more of her clients requesting the bridal ponytail. ‘I’ve lost count of how many ponytails I have done for brides lately’ says Anna. ‘Ponytails get a bad rap for being basic, and while they may be our go-to on lazy days, it does not mean we can’t elevate things! We have seen it on the football field with the Lionesses sporting many a high pony, our reels are full of them, and they can be seen throughout the pages of the glossy magazines.’ With their versatility and timeless appeal, ponytails offer that sophisticated yet effortless look. From high and sleek to low and tousled, there is a ponytail style to suit every bride. Add face-framing tendrils and adorn away with accessories. What is not to love!

4. The middle parting

From the red-carpet to the aisle, the middle parting is still a favourite with fashion-forward brides. It brings a fresh, modern take to classic styles and was seen all over Bridal Fashion Week. ‘For a cool girl look,’ Anna suggests, ‘go for a deeper middle part with hair tucked behind the ears. Add an Alice band for an extra edge.’

5. Brushed out boho waves

The boho wave trend is making a comeback again, bringing a relaxed and romantic vibe to bridal hairstyles. ‘Brides are embracing loose, tousled waves that give off a beachy and carefree feel – just right for a destination wedding. Fluff out waves to create a more lived-in and natural appearance and complete the look with your favourite accessories,’ says Anna. This trend is perfect for adding a touch of whimsy to your bridal ensemble as brushing out the curls diffuses their shape for a softer, more lived-in vibe that looks oh-so-effortless.

 6. To wash or not to wash – that is the question!

Lots of stylists recommend that hair is better for styling the day after it has been washed. Anna takes a different view on this. “You should feel fresh and clean on your wedding day, and if you tend to wash your hair daily, not washing may leave your hair greasy, which is not what we want. If you feel your hair is better without washing then do not wash it – it’s down to you and your preference, and your hair feels. I advise washing it normally and prepare your hair with the Anna Sorbie Hair Preparation Kit, which give you hold without feeling like you have too much product– just the ticket for styles that last all day.”

7. Half up hair

Half-up wedding hairstyles continue to reign supreme in 2023, offering that classic blend of hair-down elegance with the intricate offerings of pinned-up styles. ‘Infuse a touch of magic by incorporating soft twists or plaits into your half-up hairstyle,’ suggests Anna, ‘This adds dimension and creates a dreamy, romantic look – soft, flowing waves evoke a sense of effortless beauty, while the details add elements of interest and uniqueness.’

8. Don’t forget the accessories!

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication when it comes to bridal hair accessories. Whether you’re looking for a bespoke piece or something more classic in nature, minimalistic yet impactful designs will elevate your hairstyle without being overpowering.

A streamlined, blingy accessory can add a touch of glamour and elegance to your overall bridal look. Think delicate hairpin, sleek headband, or statement comb -understated accessories beautifully complement any hairstyle by allowing your natural beauty shine through while adding a touch of sparkle.

9. Two looks in one day? Why not!

This is a very popular service this year – people are often now booking their stylist for the day, not just for the morning. Brides are having their day look then changing their dress for the evening and need everything to keep up with the pace! Up-dos for the first look and a more relaxed look for the evening is popular. Talk to your stylist about how you can do this with them, or can they teach you some tricks to do it yourself if you’re on a budget?

10. Clip in extensions – let’s keep it simple!

Good quality clip-in hair extensions are a good investment, but there have to be the best quality you can afford, otherwise your hair won’t hold the curl and may look messy or dry. Extensions are great to add additional length and volume to create your hair goals – talk to your hair stylist before you buy, treat them well and they can be used time after time. If you are using extensions with fine hair, prepare the hair with a volume product that holds but does not feel sticky – Anna Sorbie Volume Spray achieves this with ease.
